1 Exfoliate all over

Your tan will be smoother and more even if you exfoliate from head to toe to remove dead skin cells. Use a facial razor or an oil-free scrub on your face, while a hot water/loofah combination works well on your body. An oil-free body wash is also recommended. Rinse off using cool water so that your pores close up.

2 Hydrate areas that absorb a lot of colour

The dry spots on your body – such as your knuckles, cuticles, palms, feet and elbows – need hydrating for a better glow. Employ an oil-free, lightweight moisturiser such as Vaseline Intensive Care Spray Moisturiser. This puts a barrier between your skin and the formula, making your appearance more natural.

3 Use a mitt

Your hands will create streaks but a mitt supplies a smooth, flat surface for flawless, even coverage. Begin with your feet and work up to your neck using big, vertical strokes. Use a smaller mitt for your face.

For your face, you could use Lancôme Self Tan Flash Bronzer or L’Oréal Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Serum; for your body, try Jergens Natural Glow Instant Sun Sunless Tanning Mousse.

If you are using self-tanner wipes, such as Dr Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Glow Pads for Face and Body, you won’t require a mitt, but ensure you keep the wipe as flat as possible to avoid a blotchy tan.

A tan will look great with a white maxi dress. For true style, you might choose an AX Paris white maxi dress or one from another fashion brand.

4 Use a hairdryer

While you are standing naked, switch on a hairdryer. The chilly air helps the formula to dry speedily and jumpstarts the process of developing a tan.

5 Wipe off excess formula.

If self-tanner is on body parts where it is not welcome, employ an oil-free makeup wipe, such as Neutrogena Oil-Free Cleansing Wipes.

6 Rinse

If your product calls for a rinse, do this with warm water and gently towel dry your skin using a patting motion. Aggressively using a towel can lift off the tan.

Follow our tips and you will be sure to look beautifully tanned.
