How to reduce allergens in your home

Michelle Hundley July 24, 2018 Reviews Leave a Comment

There are lots of different indoor allergens that can cause allergy and asthma symptoms, including dust mites, mould and pet dander. In fact, a recent study found that there are at least six different allergens in over 50% of homes!

The allergens can be found on the floors, the furniture and other surfaces in the home, so you may think that they are hard to avoid but in reality, it is entirely possible to remove allergens. While it is pretty much impossible to eliminate 100% of allergens, a proper cleaning routine should eliminate the vast majority of them.

Here are a few tips to help you reduce allergens in your home.

Dust properly

It is important to dust your home properly if you want to get rid of indoor allergens. This is because dust mites live in dust, and they are one of the main causes of allergy symptoms. However, you should avoid using a duster, as this just kicks the dust into the air. Instead, you should use a damp cloth that attracts dust to it.

Vacuum regularly

Vacuuming the floor regularly will also help to reduce the amount of allergens in your home. However, it is important to note that some vacuum cleaners also send dust into the air, so you should invest in a vacuum cleaner that won’t do this (such as a HEPA filter vacuum). It can also be useful to hire professional carpet cleaners occasionally to thoroughly clean the carpets.

Remove pet dander

Pet dander is a common allergy for a lot of people, so if you have a pet you should regularly wash their bedding. It can also be useful to wash and brush your pet on a regular basis.

Wash soft furnishings regularly

Dust mites often live in throw rugs, cushions, bedding and pillows, so you should frequently wash all of the soft furnishings in your house. Make sure that you wash the items in really hot water (at least 120 degrees) as this will ensure that the dust mites are dead. You may also want to put allergen-proof covers on your mattress if your allergies are worse at night, as this will help to reduce the number of dust mites.
