How to keep busy in retirement

Michelle Hundley November 27, 2018 Reviews Leave a Comment

Retirement is a time of life that many of us look forward to. However, the adjustment from a working life to a non-working life can take time and often people feel at a bit of a loss, and at worse, lonely. Here are some ideas of great ways to keep busy and active when you retire:

Time to learn something new

Is there a skill you’ve always wanted to master but never had the time? Perhaps you’ve always wanted to learn to play an instrument, a new language, develop your cooking skills or turn your hand to crafting? Whatever it is, now you have the chance to get stuck in and master that skill. Many retirement villages and park home sites will have lots of activities going on, so why not get involved? Volunteer

This is the ideal opportunity to get involved in something that you feel passionately about. Whether you choose to volunteer in the same industry you worked in or want to try something entirely different, so many places are crying out for an additional pair of hands. You could learn new skills and meet new people who share your passion. With so many organisations looking for help, there’s sure to be something to suit everyone.

Travel

If you can afford to travel, now is the perfect time as you no longer have the constraints of work. Your time is your own and the world is waiting. If you can’t afford far-flung countries, be sure to book some national or even local excursions and breaks. It will give you lots of look forward to and you can experience things right on your doorstep that you’d never had time for before.

Read

If you have ‘must-read’ list that’s been gradually getting bigger, then what are you waiting for? Dive into that reading list and enjoy all those books you’ve always wanted to read but could never find the time for.

Family Time

Retiring also means you can spend more time with family. Perhaps your children live far away, and you haven’t spent nearly enough time with your grandchildren. Maybe you could ease the pressure of your children’s working lives and do some childcare or babysitting? You’ve got the time for that week-long break to go and visit your sister/brother etc. Whatever the dynamics of your family, there’s bound to be someone you wish you could spend more time with. Now’s the time to make that happen.

Stay active

If you want to enjoy a long and healthy retirement, it’s important to stay active both mentally and physically. Getting regular exercise can also prevent lots of illnesses like stroke and heart disease. Why not start a new sport like swimming or tennis for example? Rehome a dog and get lots of country walks. Any exercise is beneficial, but make sure it’s something you are going to enjoy.
