Home security on a budget

Everyone wants to protect the people and things they love, and that means taking steps to ensure your home is properly protected at all times.

Fitting efficient home security measures, such as a burglar alarm system, is very effective but often expensive, and beyond many people’s budgets. So how can you make sure your home and possessions are kept safe, without breaking the bank? Here are just a few simple ideas to help you do just that.

Don’t make it easy for them

One of the most effective ways of keeping your home secure is by ensuring that you don’t make it easy for opportunistic burglars to strike. According to The Telegraph, burglars want to get in and out of your house as quickly as possible, so anything put in their way may stop them trying.

This means ensuring windows and doors are shut and locked when you are out, keeping valuables and cash locked away or at least well hidden in non-obvious places, and ensuring car keys are not kept near the door, even when you are in the house.

If you want to deter burglars, a good idea is to install a dummy alarm box – most burglars won’t chance trying to break in if they think you’re protected. You can get convincing ones from local stores.

It may also be worth joining or forming a local Neighbourhood Watch scheme.

Maintain doors and windows

Ensuring you have good, strong and lockable doors and windows is a must. Although this may not be cheap, it is worth taking into consideration when you next need to replace your windows and doors.

If you’re looking for double glazing in Hereford, such as that available from Firmfix Double Glazing Hereford, ask about toughened security glass, which will withstand even the most concerted efforts by burglars.

Use the landscape

A much overlooked way of preventing burglaries is to ensure your gardens put burglars off. Potential thieves love being hidden from the street, so ensure hedges and trees are kept trimmed to a reasonable height, and that walls and fences are not too high, so neighbours can spot intruders prowling around.

Think about placing prickly plants at points where burglars may try to climb over, too. If a burglar has to make an effort, they will often not bother.
